Chile takes concrete steps towards sustainability

The proximity of resources and demand, industry scale, and potential to reduce social and environmental impacts position Green Hydrogen as pivotal for a sustainable future.

Access World Chile, Foton and Andes Motor sign MOU to promote the use of hydrogen in heavy mining transport.

In a decisive step towards sustainability in the mining industry, Andes Motor, Foton and El Origen (now Access World Chile) have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement marks the introduction of an innovative hydrogen-powered truck for heavy road transport in mining, reinforcing the commitment of both companies to accelerating the energy transition in this industry.

The FOTON truck, which meets mining standards (6x4), provided by Andes Motor, will be tested under real mining conditions by El Origen, a company with more than 200 pieces of equipment in operation.

The recent merger of El Origen with Access World, one of the most prestigious logistics companies worldwide, has led to the creation of Access World Chile. This union aims to develop clean and sustainable technologies for heavy transport in Chile.

The main objective of the MOU is to test the truck in the extreme conditions of Chilean mining. The results obtained will not only optimize hydrogen combustion technology but also improve operational efficiency in heavy-duty tasks, transforming it into a unique R&D pilot in the global mining industry.

This joint effort positions Chile at the forefront of technological innovation in mining, a crucial sector for the national economy. Additionally, the alliance represents a significant step towards decarbonization goals in an industry that accounts for 33% of CO2 emissions in Chile.

"Our mission is to be pioneers in comprehensive, innovative, and sustainable logistics solutions for mining and other industries. This agreement is a concrete step towards decarbonization, which is vital in the fight against climate change."

This agreement marks the beginning of a process that will include the management of permits, approval, and the supply of hydrogen for the equipment, as well as coordination with various ministries and public-private entities to successfully carry out the necessary tests.

"We are convinced that transitioning towards sustainable mobility is an imperative for our sector. That is why we are joining Access World Chile to begin the joint operation of our Foton hydrogen truck and gather key information to scale the operation of this type of truck in Chile."
